The Loss of Pink
These images represent the beginning stages of loss, the loss of my great grandmother Margie Ray or better known as “Mamaw.” She unexpectedly passed away on Thursday March 29, 2012 after suffering from heart complications. The first image is a portrait of her taken Easter of last year, in the afternoons she would often sit at the kitchen table and read her bible. It all started by photographing her funeral, the long walk to the casket, her memorable hands with pink painted finger nails, and the grave covered by her favorite pink roses. Then, I began documenting details of her house that reminded me of her, her daily devotional book on the bathroom counter, my porcelain dolls placed all over the house, her ceramic angel collection, the Christmas bell that she made thousands of, and a small portion of her jewelry. I continued by photographing the house as it was emptied. I photographed the kitchen table with her bible as if she was there, her bathroom all set up ready for her to start her day, and where her living room recliners once sat. Ending with the empty living room represents the next step in loss, having to pack up and move on.
